This is Kelly Thomas. He’s a mentally ill homeless man who suffered from schizophrenia. At first, it seems like a routine questioning until the officers begin to joke about the languages he can speak and Kelly’s inability to name himself. Told to sit down on the curb, Kelly is then told by a police officer that he’s about to get “fucked up by his fists.” Realizing the danger, he goes to get up and brushes the officer’s hand away. Without an attempt to verbally control or calm him down, the officer hits Thomas in the face with his baton and both officers tackle him to the ground. He then struggles to breathe and begs for forgiveness as the officers “subdue” him. The officers use blunt force to Kelly’s face. The officer is quoted as saying on official transcripts “..I just started smashing his face to hell.” He repeatedly cries for help as the officers mercilessly beat him and with the last bit of energy left, Kelly Thomas cries out for help to his father. He calls out to his father for help thirty times throughout the ordeal. When the medical team arrives, the officers are treated first despite the massive damage to Thomas’ face and his cyanotic appearance. Kelly Thomas was left in a growing pool of his own blood. The officers are then heard laughing afterwards. Kelly Thomas died five days later after being taken off life support. Only two of the six officers were formally charged in the case.
